drawers similar to ikea alex – Wooden drawers, over time may develop niggling little faults which we always put up with, awkward and annoying as they may be when really – the majority of these problems are relatively easy to fix. Drawers at which the foundation has broken and sticking drawers are possibly the most common problems experienced. With only a little knowledge these may be rectified without having to start calling around for a joiner as the first or our sole option.

Overloading drawers may often be the root reason for sticking drawers. The first step is to completely empty the drawer and eliminate review. Check for protruding or loose nails or pins either on the jar or at and around the drawer framework. Where obvious; hammer back flush and refit drawer. It could be that straightforward.

Tip. Before obtaining the toolkit out for sticking drawers; first attempt rubbing on the runners and drawer grooves with candle wax. This might just do the task with no additional effort.

Drawer runners are also the culprit. Assess how smoothly the draw slides across the wooden runners. Should they’ve worked loose it may be the reason behind sticking; again, usually due to overloading. If so, then simply apply new glue to the runner and pin back into position.

The uppermost sides can become worn with time and use. Check that the underside of the runner is still great – it might be possible to simply remove the runner and turn it over. If so, then cautiously prise it off with a wood chisel- apply glue- and re-pin into position.

New runners may be required if turning the previous runners round doesn’t solve the issue of sticking. Where this is the case cut a few pieces of timber to the same dimensions as the first runners, smooth with a moderate abrasive paper and drill with the smallest wood drill bit in your toolbox to take the small diameter of the fixing panel nails or pins. Apply a thin coat of wood glue to the rear of the runner- press into position- and combine with pins.

Drawer bases may also suffer the adverse effects of overloading. In time they’ll begin to sag, and eventually they can split completely, requiring replacement. In this case, cut on a fresh foundation bit from either plywood or from a hardwood of choice. Next, remove the nails or pins securing the damaged foundation to the entire body of this drawer using pincers, and remove any glue blocks which may be attached with a mallet and wood chisel. Replace with fresh foundation by gluing and using pins.

From a strength perspective, depending on utilization, this may not be the most suitable choice.
