shallow plastic drawers – Wooden drawers, over time can create niggling little faults which we always put up with, awkward and bothersome as they can be – when actually – the vast majority of these problems are relatively easy to fix. Drawers at which the base has broken and sticking drawers are possibly the most frequent problems experienced. With just a little knowledge these can be rectified without having to start phoning around for a joiner since the first or our sole alternative.
Overloading drawers can often be the main cause of sticking drawers. The very first step is to completely empty the drawer and remove for review. Check for protruding or loose pins or nails either on the drawer or in and about the drawer frame. It might be that simple.
Tip. This may just do the task without any further effort.
Drawer runners are also the culprit. Check how smoothly the lure slides across the wooden runners. Should they’ve worked loose it can be the reason behind sticking; again, usually due to overloading. In that case, then just apply new adhesive to the runner and pin back into position.
The uppermost sides can become worn with time and use. Check the bottom of the runner remains great – it may be possible to just remove the runner and turn it over. In that case, then cautiously prise it off using a wood chisel- apply adhesive- and re-pin into place.
New runners may be demanded if turning the previous runners round doesn’t fix the problem of sticking. Apply a thin coat of wood adhesive to the back of the runner- press place- and combine with hooks.
Drawer bases can also suffer the adverse effects of overloading. In time they will start to sag, and they can split completely, requiring replacement. In this case, cut on a new base piece from either plywood or from a hardwood of choice. Then remove the pins or nails securing the damaged base to the entire body of this drawer utilizing pincers and remove any glue blocks which might be attached with a mallet and wood chisel. Replace with new base by gluing and utilizing hooks.
From a strength perspective, depending on usage, this might not be the most suitable choice.
